1 Week Honduras Itinerary

  • 1 day in Copan
  • 4 days in Utila or Roatan
  • 2 days at Lago de Yojoa

Day 1 – Explore Copan Ruinas

Start the day by making your way to the ruins of Copan. Copan is one of the most important sites of the Mayan civilisation. The main complex consists of the Acropolis and several plazas. At the Hieroglyphic Stairway Plaza, you can find a stairway with more than 1,250 individual glyphs which constitute the longest known Mayan inscription. Additionally, there are a lot of glyphs, statues, and stelae dotted around the area which you can explore.

Towards the exit, you have a high chance to spot Macaws.

💡
Bucketlist2life tip: If you want to see more Macaws, you can also check out Macaw Mountain .

In the afternoon, explore a bit around the town of Copan Ruinas. At the centre, you can find the central park and the cathedral. Dotted around them are cobblestone streets with picturesque buildings and some street art.

El Lugar del Te y Chocolate is a nice place for a rest. For food, we loved Comedor Y Pupuseria Mary.

If you have more time, there are other nice things to do in town, like going on a horseback ride, visiting hot springs, hiking to Hacienda San Lucas, and of course, more Mayan ruins.

How to Get to Copan

Copan is well connected to Santa Ana, El Salvador, Antigua, Guatemala, and La Ceiba, Honduras by shuttle buses.

Where to Stay in Copan

Berakah is cheap, nice and central. They also offer shuttles to La Ceiba.

Day 2 – Make your Way to the Bay Islands

No Honduras itinerary will be complete without a visit to the Bay Islands Utila and Roatan. They are your quintessential Caribbean islands with turquoise water and white sand. If you ask us, they are the highlight of your Honduras backpacking trip.

How to Get to Utila and Roatan

If you want to skip San Pedro Sula, the murder capital of the world, you can shuttle directly from Copan to La Ceiba, which enables you to catch the late ferry. We just booked a shuttle with Hostel Berakah in Copan. There are currently two ferries from La Ceiba to Utila (9:00 am & 4:30 pm) and two from La Ceiba to Roatan (9:30 am & 4:30 pm).

Where to Stay on Utila

Stay at a dive school! The only hostel on the island is not worth the extra money. Dive schools let you stay for free even if you only do fun dives as well as on days you don’t dive.

Day 3 - 5 – Scuba Dive or Relax at the Beach.

Utila is great for Scuba diving (and partying to some extent). The island is small and there are limited things to do, which include mostly ocean-based activities like hanging out on the beach, island hopping, or kayaking. Our favourite beach was Chepes Beach with its free umbrellas.

💡
Bucketlist2life tip: We gave you three days on the island because that’s the time you need to complete your PADI Open Water Diver 😉

If you don’t want to scuba dive, Roatan is the better choice for you. The island is bigger, featuring more beaches and activities. You can zipline, hang out with sloths, and even visit a botanical garden.

Day 6 – Make your Way to Lago de Yojoa

Lago de Yojoa is the largest lake in Honduras. It’s also a nice place to stop and take a rest on your way from the Bay Islands to Leon, Nicaragua.

How to Get to Lago de Yojoa

To get from La Ceiba to Lago de Yojoa, you can

  1. Take the D&D Brewery and Lodge shuttle.
  2. Take a local bus from La Ceiba to San Pedro Sula and an El Mochito bus from San Pedro Sula to D&D Brewery (beware not to take the bus to “Lake Yojoa” because that will drop you off on the wrong side of the lake!). They should leave every 30 minutes from 5:50 am to 5:30 pm.
  3. Take an Uber.

Day 7 – Explore Lago de Yojoa

The main activity is to take a boat out on the lake. We opted for a guided tour but you can also take a kayak out. You can just walk to the canal and compare offers.

Other things you can do at Lago de Yojoa are

  • Walk the trails at Finca Paraiso coffee plantation
  • Hikes
    • guided: “Las Nalgas” Ridge Hike which the D&D Brewery offers every day.
    • independent: Los Naranjos Ecological and Archaeological Park
    • independent: Cerro Azul Meámbar National Park (PANACAM)
  • Explore Taulabe Cave
  • Explore Cataratas Pulhapanzak, the largest waterfall in Honduras (30 minutes away)

When you stay at D&D Brewery and Lodge, you can also spend a lovely time here, tasting the local craft beers, having a bite, and watching some hummingbirds fly by.
