Our Totumo Mud Volcano Tour Review

What to Expect on the Totumo Mud Volcano Tour?

We went on the Cartagena: Totumo Mud Volcano Experience by Backpackers Cartagena. As this is a half-day tour, you can decide whether you want to go in the morning or the afternoon.

After our pickup at Muelle de los Pegasos Principal, we drove to Totumo for around 1 hour.

Once you arrive, you will change into your bathing suit and climb the 50 steps to the mud volcano.

At the top, some guys will take care of your phones and your shoes. Another guy will help you into the mud and give you a quick massage if you want to – no worries, you can also opt out if you don’t like to be touched.

By the way, there are only a few steps down into the mud and they are pretty easy to climb.

The guy with the phone will take pictures of you if you want to.

The mineral-rich mud is pleasantly warm and super floaty.

When you’re done floating around in the mud, you descend the volcano on your bare feet and walk a couple of steps to the nearby lake where women will be waiting to clean you.

Afterwards, we got a snack and a soft drink.

All the people who helped you (shoes, pictures, massage, cleaning) expect a tip. We collected money from all the tour members and gave it to the people collectively.

Last but not least, we drove back to Cartagena for around an hour.

Totumo Mud Volcano Tour – Our Review

We thoroughly enjoyed our Totumo Mud Volcano Experience – so much so that we could have stayed in the mud much longer. We were not quite sure what to expect before we went but it was absolutely not physically challenging – the way up the volcano and down into the mud are both very short.

Indeed, we found the experience to be very relaxing and our skin was baby-smooth for days.

The tour was well organised and the tour guide friendly. We especially liked giving a collective tip because it made the experience a lot less stressful.

One important thing that you need to know is that you will be touched. You can opt out of the massage but it might be necessary for the guy to correct your position as the mud is incredibly floaty. Also, the mud will get everywhere and the ladies washing you will do their best to get the mud out of everywhere.
