Berca Mud Volcanoes in Romania are a hidden gem hat make you feel like you’re on another planet!
Yes, we are Geology nerds so we couldn’t help but be amazed by the Berca Mud Volcanoes in Romania. Even if you’re not into Geology, the volcanoes are a super unique sight which makes you feel like you’re not on planet Earth anymore.
Mud Volcanoes are small volcano-shaped structures typically a few metres high.
They are formed by gases which erupt from a depth of 3000 m (10000 ft). On their way, the gas absorbs salty water and mud. The mud dries off at the surface, creating a relatively solid conical structure resembling a real volcano.
When we visited the Berca Mud Volcanoes, there was a constant flow of more gas and mud and we could observe bubbles in the “craters”.
Even if you’re not a Geology nerd like us, the Berca Mud Volcanoes are absolutely worth a visit. They are also a great stop on any Romania road trip.
They are a very unique occurrence which can only be observed in a few other places like Ukraine or Azerbaijan.
The landscape feels very otherworldly – you’ll feel a bit like you’re walking on the moon.
They are also a great photo op 😉
The Berca Mud Volcanoes are close to Berca in Buzău County in Romania.
There are three areas with mud volcanoes which we have marked on the map:
You have two options:
We stayed at Vila Speranta and can fully recommend it. It is just a 10 minute drive to the Boilers of Berca and a 25 minute drive to the Pâclele mud volcanoes.
The entrance fee for the volcanoes is currently 4 Lei per person. You have to pay separately for every site you visit.
The visiting hours are between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Both the Big and the Small mud volcanoes have free parking.
