Berca Mud Volcanoes FAQ

What Are the Berca Mud Volcanoes?

Mud Volcanoes are small volcano-shaped structures typically a few metres high.

They are formed by gases which erupt from a depth of 3000 m (10000 ft). On their way, the gas absorbs salty water and mud. The mud dries off at the surface, creating a relatively solid conical structure resembling a real volcano.

When we visited the Berca Mud Volcanoes, there was a constant flow of more gas and mud and we could observe bubbles in the “craters”.

💡
Bucketlist2life fun fact: The expelled mud is cold, as it comes from the continental crust and not from the mantle like a real volcano.
