TL;DR

See Chiang Rai’s highlights without the transport headache – we found this packed 7-site tour surprisingly well-paced, well-organised, and absolutely worth it if you don’t have your own wheels.

Looking for the best way to see Chiang Rai’s main sights in one day? The Chiang Rai 7 Major Sites Guided Tour combines the White Temple, Blue Temple, Black House, Longneck Karen Village, Choui Fong Tea Plantation, the Golden Triangle and the Opium Museum with lunch.

These sights are spread across the region, so seeing them independently means figuring out transport, timing, and tickets yourself. A guided tour takes care of the logistics, but you’re also committing to a packed itinerary and a full day on the road.

We took this tour ourselves and found the mix of organised sightseeing and free time worked surprisingly well. Here’s our honest opinion on the stops, the guide, the organisation and whether the 7 Major Sites Tour is actually worth it.

7 Main Sites Tour Itinerary

This is the itinerary for the Guided Tour of 7 Major Sites from Chiang Rai that we took. Your tour might vary due to weather conditions or other circumstances.

1. White Temple (Wat Rong Khun)

The White Temple is easily the highlight of the tour – and one of the most unusual temples we’ve seen in Thailand. The entire complex is covered in intricate white details, and the closer you look, the more strange little elements you discover.

The inside is just as unusual, with contemporary artwork that is very different from what you might expect in a Buddhist temple. Unfortunately, photography isn’t allowed inside, so you’ll have to take it in with your own eyes.

As one of Chiang Rai’s most famous sights, it can get busy, but it’s popular for a reason. We definitely thought this stop was worth it.

2. Blue Temple (Wat Rong Sue Ten)

The Blue Temple is a good stop to include alongside the White Temple because it’s just as striking. The deep blue colours and elaborate golden details make the temple stand out immediately.

It was designed by an artist who studied under Chalermchai Kositpipat, the artist behind the White Temple, which probably explains why the two have such a distinctive and slightly surreal feel.

One advantage of the Blue Temple is that you can take photos inside, where the colourful murals and huge Buddha image are particularly impressive.

3. Black House Museum (Baan Dam)

The Black House Museum – an art museum created by Thai artist Thawan Duchanee – is probably the most unusual stop on the itinerary.

The main building is filled with dark, unconventional artwork and animal-inspired pieces. There are also numerous smaller buildings scattered throughout the grounds that you can explore from the outside.

It’s not necessarily a stop for everyone, but we liked the contrast with Chiang Rai’s colourful temples. If you’re interested in contemporary or slightly weird art, it’s definitely worth seeing.

4. Buffet Lunch

Lunch is a buffet of local Thai dishes, and we thought the food was genuinely tasty. The restaurant was also a quiet and comfortable place to take a break during a packed sightseeing day. With so many stops on the itinerary, having somewhere to sit down, eat properly and recharge before continuing was actually a welcome part of the tour.

5. Longneck Karen Village

We were initially sceptical about this stop. Visiting a so-called hill tribe village on an organised tour can easily feel like a tourist trap, so we weren’t expecting much.

Our experience was surprisingly different. When we visited, our van was the only one in the parking lot, and we were the only tour group there. Instead of just walking through the souvenir stalls, we wandered further into the village, where we got a much more relaxed impression of everyday life.

People even invited us to sit down and have a beer with them, despite the obvious language barrier. Of course, experiences like this depend heavily on how busy the village is and how the visit is handled, so we wouldn’t assume every tour will be identical to ours. But for us, this turned out to be one of the more unexpected stops of the day.

6. Choui Fong Tea Plantation

As tea lovers, this was one of the stops we were particularly looking forward to. Choui Fong Tea Plantation sits in the hills outside Chiang Rai, with rows of tea plants covering the surrounding slopes.

The setting is probably the biggest attraction. You get beautiful views across the terraced plantation, and there’s also the opportunity to sample the tea and see some of the products made from it.

It’s a nice change of pace after visiting temples and museums all day and gives the tour a bit more variety. If you’re into tea, the stop is an easy win; even if you’re not, the scenery makes it worthwhile.

7. The Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle is where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, making it one of those places that is more interesting for its location than for a single spectacular sight.

There’s a viewpoint where you can look across the Mekong towards the neighbouring countries. We visited during smoky season, so visibility wasn’t ideal, and the views were fairly hazy. That’s worth keeping in mind when booking this tour: the Golden Triangle is still an interesting geographical stop, but your experience will depend a lot on weather and air quality.

8. Opium House

The Opium Museum is a good addition to the Golden Triangle stop if you want to understand why this region became so closely associated with opium. The museum explains the history of opium production and trade in the area, as well as its wider impact on the people and communities living here. It adds some historical context to the Golden Triangle rather than just treating it as a photo stop.

7 Major Sites Tour – Our Honest Opinion

We really enjoyed this tour. The itinerary is packed, but the organisation was seamless, and having everything from transport and entrance tickets to lunch taken care of made the day completely hassle-free.

Our guide was excellent, with perfect English and a good balance between explaining the sights and giving us time to explore on our own. The comfortable van and complimentary water bottles were also appreciated on such a long day, while the buffet lunch was a tasty way to slow down and relax.

For us, the biggest advantage is the logistics. If you don’t want to rent a scooter and don’t want to pay for a private driver and/or guide, this guided tour is an easy way to see a lot of Chiang Rai’s surrounding sights in a single day. We also liked that the tour offered an optional drop-off at the night market, which we made good use of for dinner.

The only real downside was the smoky season. Many of our pictures turned out quite gloomy-looking and visibility at the Golden Triangle was limited when we visited, but that was a seasonal condition rather than something the tour could control. Overall, we thought the combination of sights, transport, guide and included tickets made for a very convenient day trip.

What Other Travellers Say About the 7 Major Sites Tour

⭐ Rating: 4.9 / 5 (240+ reviews)

A very nice activity that I recommend doing in Chiang Rai. In fact, in just one day, it manages to show you and let you experience all the places of interest (which is difficult to do on your own because they are far from each other). I found the pace pleasant. [..] In addition, the lunch was hearty and delicious. As for the live guide, he was interesting, funny, and dedicated, just like the driver, and they both made me have an incredible day. I highly recommend this activity.

Is the 7 Main Sites Tour Worth It?

So, is the Chiang Rai 7 Major Sites Tour worth it? For us, yes – particularly if you don’t have your own transport. The sights are spread out, and visiting them independently would require considerably more planning and possibly multiple transport arrangements.

You get to see a lot of Chiang Rai in one day without worrying about driving, navigation, entrance fees or even lunch. The itinerary is packed, but we thought the timing worked well. For us, the amount of time at each sight – both guided and free – was enough to see the main highlights without dragging the day out, and we never wished we had significantly more time at the stops.

If you want a convenient overview of Chiang Rai’s major sights rather than spending several days exploring the area independently, we think this tour is a good fit.
