Honest Caracol, Rio On Pools & Rio Frio Cave Tour Review

We opted for this Caracol Maya Ruins Tour Including Rio On Pools, Rio Frio Cave and a Picnic Lunch:

Caracol, Rio On Pools & Rio Frio Cave Tour Itinerary

This is the itinerary of the exact Caracol Maya Ruins Tour Including Rio On Pools, Rio Frio Cave and a Picnic Lunch we went on:

1. Rio Frio Cave

Nestled within the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, Rio Frio Cave felt like a hidden jewel of Belize. The cave is surprisingly accessible, even for those with reduced mobility, which made it easy for us to take our time and truly soak in the natural beauty. From the moment we saw its massive 20 m (65 ft) tall entrance, we knew we were in for something special.

Walking inside felt like entering another world – sparkling fresh-water pools, cascading waterfalls, and intricate stalactite formations. Additionally, this cave was once a sacred burial site for the ancient Maya, and the sense of history and mystery was almost palpable.

2. Caracol Maya Ruins

Caracol is the largest and most important ancient Maya city in Belize. It once covered nearly 200 square kilometres (77 square miles) – larger than modern-day Belize City – and supported a population more than twice the size of the city today. Long thought to be a secondary site, Caracol is now recognised as a major political and cultural hub of the Classic Maya Lowlands, rivalling Tikal in size, power, and influence.

Visiting Caracol felt like stepping back in time. On our guided tour, we wandered through the monumental architecture, marvelled at the intricate carvings on plazas, altars, and stelae, and imagined the lives of the ancient Maya who once thrived here. Climbing Caana (Sky Temple), the tallest man-made structure in Belize at nearly 41 m (135 feet), was incredible – the panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and even into neighbouring Guatemala took our breath away. As we explored the site, we kept our eyes open for howler monkeys, coatis, and birds – adding a lively, unforgettable touch of wildlife to this historic adventure.

3. Rio On Pools

The Rio On Pools were the grand finale of the day! Nestled within the stunning Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, the pools are framed by granite rocks and ledges that create some of the most picturesque waterfalls and freshwater swimming holes we’ve ever seen. The riverbanks offer perfect spots for a picnic, and we couldn’t resist snapping photos and taking in the views before jumping in.

After touring Caracol and exploring Rio Frio Cave, stopping here to refresh with a swim felt amazing. We floated in the crystal-clear pools, slid down natural rock slides – with the guidance of our tour guide –, and soaked up the serene beauty of the forest around us.

What Other Travellers Say About the Caracol, Rio On Pools & Rio Frio Cave Tour

⭐ Rating: 4.9 / 5 (239 reviews)

We loved this tour. I think the company that does this tour is great. This was our second tour with them. We lucked out with a very small group and we were in a nice new van. It’s a very early start, but worth it. Bring a snack. The first stop was a stunning cave. Then Caracol, which was amazing. The guide gave us time to explore an area by ourselves, so that was cool. The last stop was the pools. Be careful because the water can be strong, but it was so cool. A great time was had by all.
