TL;DR

A comprehensive, honest guide to Dangriga—how to get there, where to stay, what to do, and why it’s the best base for visiting Tobacco Caye.

On our recent trip to Belize, we used the Garifuna town Dangriga as a base to visit Tobacco Caye. This is our honest travel guide to help you make the most of your visit!

Why Visit Dangriga?

Dangriga is the perfect jumping-off point for visiting Tobacco Caye. In all honesty, you can skip Dangriga if you don’t want to visit this gem of a Caribbean Island – there are many nicer beach towns in Belize!

Here’s our complete Tobacco Caye travel guide:

How to Get to Dangriga

How to Get from Belize City to Dangriga with Public Transport

To get from Caye Caulker to Dangriga, first, you need to go to Belize City.

At the bus station, you can just hop on one of the southbound buses. Make sure to check the schedule ahead of time to avoid a long wait. The bus ride takes around three hours.

How to Get from Hopkins to Dangriga with Public Transport

There are some direct buses from Hopkins to Dangriga but they are few and far between.

Alternatively, you can take a (shared) taxi to Hopkins Section on the main highway. Here, you can hop on one of the northbound Belize City - Punta Gorda buses.

You can find the full bus schedule here.

Where We Stayed in Dangriga

We stayed at Bonefish Hotel. The location is amazing, the staff is friendly, and the rooms are comfy. We don’t think there’s any better value for money in Dangriga.

Here are some more affordable accommodations in Belize that we love:

What to Do in Dangriga

1. Head to Tobacco Caye

The main reason to visit Dangriga is to hop on a boat to the hidden gem island Tobacco Caye. Thank us later!

2. Garifuna Culture

Dangriga is also known as the "culture capital of Belize" due to its influence on punta music and other forms of Garifuna culture.

  • As a tourist, your best bet to witness Garifuna culture is probably the drumming which takes place at Tuani Garifuna regularly.
  • You can also visit Studio Gallery Cayetano by one of Belize’s most renowned punta-rock artists and musicians, Pen Cayetano.
  • There’s also the Gulisi Garifuna Museum but we’re not quite sure if it’s still open.

3. Stann Creek

Dangriga is formerly known as Stann Creek Town. Stann Creek is a nice place to go and observe the local life – especially the fishermen and fish vendors.

4. Mayflower Bocawina National Park

Dangriga is super close to Mayflower Bocawina National Park with waterfalls and Mayan ruins. At the time of our visit, we couldn’t find any official tours but you could go with a taxi or a rental car,

Where to Eat in Dangriga

We didn’t stay super long in town but these are two places we can fully recommend:

  1. Island Breeze Bar and Grill for great sea views.
  2. Tuani Garifuna for Garifuna cuisine.

How Long to Stay in Dangriga

We would recommend using Dangriga as a base to spend the night before visiting Tobacco Caye. If you have enough time, you can also spend one night after your visit on the island.

Infrastructure in Dangriga

Internet in Dangriga

The internet in our accommodation was fast enough to work. Our local SIM card also worked perfectly fine.

ATMs in Dangriga

Currently, there are three ATMs in Dangriga so you should have a good chance to get some cash.

Bucketlist2life tip: Especially useful before going to cash-only Tobacco Caye.

Supermarkets in Dangriga

We are not the biggest fans of the supermarkets in Belize but there are enough smaller and slightly bigger shops to fulfil your basic needs in Dangriga.
