Trying to decide between Yucatán and Oaxaca? The good news is that you can't really go wrong. Both are among our favourite regions in Mexico and offer a mix of beautiful beaches, colonial towns, great food, and fascinating history.

That said, they feel very different. Yucatán is famous for its cenotes, Mayan ruins, Caribbean beaches, and easy travel logistics. Oaxaca is known for its incredible food, indigenous culture, mountain landscapes, and laid-back Pacific coast.

The Yucatán Peninsula is home to some of Mexico's most famous beaches, including those around Cancun, Holbox, and the Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel).

You'll find white-sand Caribbean beaches and turquoise water as well as island escapes.

Better for calm water and swimming.
Oaxaca's Pacific Coast has excellent beaches around Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, and Zipolite.

Not all beaches in Oaxaca are safe for swimming!

Better for surfing and laid-back beach towns.

Nightlife

Yucatán is home to some of Mexico's most famous nightlife destinations. Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum are packed with beach clubs, rooftop bars, cocktail lounges, and late-night venues.

Cancún is also one of the world's most famous Spring Break destinations, attracting thousands of students each year.

Better for nightlife, beach clubs, and big parties.
Oaxaca's nightlife is more relaxed.

Puerto Escondido, especially the area around Zicatela, is the centre of Oaxaca's nightlife scene, with beach bars, live music, DJs, and a lively backpacker and surfer crowd.

Oaxaca City is known for its (mezcal) bars, live music venues, and atmospheric plazas.

Better for laid-back evenings, surf culture, and local vibes.

Tourist hotspots like Cancun or Playa del Carmen can be expensive.
Inland destinations like Mérida or Valladolid offer better value for money.

Expect moderate prices.
Oaxaca remains one of Mexico's best-value destinations. Prices in Puerto Escondido have gone up but still remain lower than in Yucatán’s hotspots.

Areas near Cancún as well as Chichén Itzá receive huge numbers of visitors, but much of Yucatán remains relaxed. Oaxaca City and Puerto Escondido are popular but still feel authentic. Many regions remain far off the tourist trail.

Playa del Carmen and Tulum are among Latin America's most established digital nomad hubs, with coworking spaces, strong expat communities, and plenty of cafés to work from.
Merida also has a growing remote-work community.
Puerto Escondido has become one of Mexico's fastest-growing digital nomad destinations, offering a more laid-back and affordable alternative to Yucatán. Oaxaca City also has a growing remote-work community.

Yucatán is generally considered one of the safest regions in Mexico. The capital Mérida consistently ranks among the country's safest cities.
Tourist areas are well-developed, though standard precautions still apply.
Oaxaca is generally safe for tourists, particularly Oaxaca City and the coast. As in any destination, petty theft can occur, and travel in remote mountain regions may require additional planning

Yucatán or Oaxaca – Our Personal Favourite

Our personal favourite is the Yucatán Peninsula. Here are some of the reasons:

  • We love Caribbean beaches.
  • We are not surfers but Scuba divers, and we love diving and snorkelling at the Mesoamerican Reef System.
  • We love swimming in Cenotes (we love exploring all kinds of caves), and this experience is just too unique to pass up.
  • We love exploring the known and lesser-known Mayan ruins.
  • We love the car-free island vibes of Isla Holbox.
  • We love mixing up our backpacking trip with an all inclusive resort stay.

We have visited the Yucatan Peninsula twice so far, and we already plan to go back one day as it’s one of our favourite destinations in the world!
