Our bucketlist

TL;DR

This is how we organize our bucketlist. We want to do a road trip in the USA, go on a safari in Africa, visit our East European neighbors and enjoy the beaches of the Maldives!

The word bucketlist is in the name of our blog. Isn't it crazy that you haven't seen our bucketlist yet? In this blog post, we'll share our top bucketlist destinations on every continent!

The great American road trip

We want to start our USA road trip in the wild west: driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles and seeing the national parks. Afterwards, we plan to make our way east to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon, up to Utah's national parks, and north to Yellowstone. Driving back south we would like to make our way through Colorado to the old Route 66, where we plan to cross from New Mexico to Texas. There, we want to check out the street food in Austin and San Antonio before we drive further east to New Orleans. Our plan is to finish up our trip in Florida with beaches and amusement parks.

Our own private Gringo Trail in South America

We have already ticked Mexico off our bucketlist so we want to start this trip in Belize chilling on Caye Caulker and diving the Blue Hole. From there we want to make our way south through Central America visiting the ruins of Tikal in Guatemala, surfing in El Salvador, diving in Honduras, sandboarding down a volcano in Nicaragua, visiting sloths in Costa Rica, relaxing in Bocas del Torro in Panama, and experiencing Caribbean vibes in Cartagena, Columbia.

Diving the Galapagos islands is high on our bucketlist as well as several places in Peru. Of course, we want to see Machu Picchu. Additionally, we would like to visit Huacachina and the Nazca Lines before we make our way across Lake Titicaca to Bolivia, where we want to visit the Uyuni salt flats, finishing this trip off in Chile with the Atacama desert.

Visiting our own backyard in Europe

First and foremost we would like to reschedule our cancelled 2020 trips to Slovenia, the Ukraine, and Norway. Additionally, we would like to do a tour around the Baltics visiting Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland. In Ireland, we would love to pay homage to our love for beer and visit the Guinness brewery and in Scotland, we would like to pay homage to our love for whisky and visit several distilleries, preferably on Islay. Last but not least there are several places in the Balkans we would like to visit like the beaches of Albania, Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia and the fjord of Kotor in Montenegro.

Africa - or all the safaris, please

In Africa, we mainly plan to do two things: diving and going on safaris. We want to visit loads of national parks in Namibia before heading south to Cape Town, South Africa. There, we would love to dive with sharks (ethically and without encouraging a change in their behavior and being in a cage). We would also love to dive in Mozambique as we have only heard amazing things about it. Additionally, we would like to visit loads of national parks in Tanzania and Kenya, as well as - you guessed it - do some diving in Zanzibar.

The quirkiest county on our Africa bucketlist might be Tunisia but as a huge history nerd I need to see Carthage and as Star Wars nerds we need to see Tataouine. If the political situation allows for it, we would love to see Ethiopia and visit the famous rock churches.

Take me to the South Sea - Australia and Oceania

I have been dreaming about the paradise islands of the South Sea for as long as I can think - above all Tahiti and Bora Bora. Australia has only been added to my bucketlist quite recently and I'm still not 100% convinced that no snake or spider or saltwater crocodile will kill me when I go there but some places are just too tempting - first and foremost the Whitsunday Islands on the east coast and Hamelin Bay on the west coast. I feel like I have to explain the last one: Hamelin Bay is one of the very few places in the world where you can see living Stromatolites. They are one of the first life forms in the fossil record and were extremely abundant 1.25 billion years ago (for your reference the dinosaurs evolved around 250 million years ago).

Another weird item on my bucketlist is Wellington, New Zealand. When I was young I was extremely obsessed with the teen TV show The Tribe which was filmed in Wellington, so much so that I even rewatched the whole show in 2020. I think it was more popular in Germany than anywhere else so give me a shoutout in the comments if you know it!

Looking for banana pancakes in Asia

Our very first backpacking trip brought us to Thailand but we never got around to do the whole banana pancake trail. We would love to see Angkor Wat in Cambodia, visit the Kuang Si waterfalls in Laos, and finishing off with Vietnam, where we'd like to visit Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, and Hanoi as well as cruise the Halong Bay.

We would love to visit several islands of the Philippines, preferably Palawan, Cebu, and Siargao. Diving Sipadan is on top of our scuba bucketlist and we plan to combine it with a visit to Kuala Lumpur.

Going further west we have quite a few places we want to visit in India. Of course, there's the Taj Mahal and other places in Rajasthan, but there's also the Himalayas, Goa, and Kerala as well as the Andaman Islands.

Even further west we would like to visit the Arabian Peninsula, where we want to experience the grandeur and the luxury hotels of the United Arab Emirates as well as camp wild in the desert of Oman.

Last but definitely not least, our top bucketlist destination of all time is the Maldives. Need I say more?

Let us know if we missed anything important in the comments - we will add it!

True! I'm a fan of the warm climate. Philipp wants to go to Canada though. But he didn't contribute any pins to our map yet. I should make him ASAP!

Hi Carina, you have an enormous bucket list! A road trip through Chile and Bolivia are also on our bucket list along with seeing the Uyuni Salt Flats. When in America check out Glacier National Park too, it’s our favorite park. We have lived in Colorado and go back often so we would be happy to help if you need any recommendations.

That is the ultimate US road trip! How long would you take to do it in an ideal scenario? You start to realize how big and empty some stretches of the US are when you actually start driving around it, haha. I haven't done such an extensive road trip but have hit lots of those spots so I will have tips when you can finally make this dream a reality. I've been to San Fransisco are and LA but never driven the whole coast along them, but I'd love to to the Pacific Coast Highway.

I love that Maldives as high on your list as mine! I just don't want to go until I do it right and stay in an overwater bungalow. As for Africa, I did a safari when I younger in South Africa and it was great but we didn't see any big cats in the wild. Someone I know did Kenya and said the Ngorongoro crater had incredible amounts of wildlife so if you make it to Tanzania add that to the list! I really want to do Capetown as well for the wine, penguins, and I'd love to shark cage dive. Everyone thinks I'm crazy when I tell them that!

I'd love to have at least one month for the US road trip, in an ideal world as much time as it takes for us to see everything we want to see without hurrying...
I feel the same about the Maldives. I've always been very reluctant to do it half heartedly. If i go I want to stay in a nice over water bungalow with all inclusive food and drinks. They can be such a price point on the islands and I don't want to have to think about every cocktail. You wouldn't believe how crazy people think I am when I tell them I want to leave the cage out of the shark diving equation.

I see you are trying to earn brownie points with the #TravelBlogTuesday hosts by mentioning Dublin and Islay. It works. These are sole ambitious trips, especially those in the US and Central America. Though you mentioned a lot of places I want to see too. Great list.

Actually, I did learn about the Whisky hike on Islay on #travelblogtuesday and added it to our bucketlist immediately!

Your bucket list does not look entirely different from ours, Carina, great stuff. Also, are you saying that you will do the shark diving inside a cage or without a cage, I wasn't sure? (I hope inside a cage, considering those white ones have quite a ferocious appetite.)

Carina | Bucketlist2Life

21.04.2021, 11:47

Definitely without a cage! Sharks are not as dangerous as people think and the baiting when you do cage diving is so detrimental to their natural behavior. The cage diving operations in general are often not very ethical...
